Vinitaly - four days of exhaustive wine tasting, banquets, lunches, severe heat - tough!
We're seeing all of our producers - here are some highlights:
Terre di Sava - Catarina, the winemaker, has really hit the spot with these 2010 Puglian beauties. Really expressive fruit and good typicity. Softness of touch. Negroamaro - really juicy vibrant young fruit; Salice Salentino - complex, chunky curranty fruity, intense, excellent acidity (more, more, more!) ; Primitivo - plums and more plums, brooding, deep wine but not heavy in any way; But the star of the show is a gorgeous apricot-scented Verdeca - what an eye-opener.
Sollazzo - are we selling these too cheap? Umbria isn't capable of making wine this good, eh? Trebbiano/Grechetto 10 - touches of spice and aniseed and liquorice - wow!; Pinot Grigio 10 - complex and spicy, way way above the usual PG; Sangiovese/Merlot 10 - vibrant summer fruits in a basket, so inviting I want to roll around in this stuff; Cabernet/Merlot 10 - more serious now, a touch of soft tannins, great value of money
John Matta, four times IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year, has decked out his stand in red, not for those of a nervous disposition. I done the sunglasses and try to look trendy. No question, I'm an urbane and stylish bloke! To the wines: oh, what style, what elegance. That's the word - elegant. Superb! Mandorle Rosso 09 has an ethereal, floating on air quality, undefinable but ravishing; San Jacopo Classic 09 - superlative balance, soft tannins and sweet sweet fruit; Petri Chianti Classico Riserva 08 - stunning, suggestive, feminine wine, silky, just-out-of-your-reach; La Prima 08 - rich, brooding, majestic, regal. Heaven. The very eptiome of Chianti.
Off to see Rikki Tedeschi and his team at their new vineyard at Maternigo, the property they acquired four years ago, and whose vineyard planting is now almost complete. Rikki is evaluating day by day the results of the first vinification of Corvina and Corvinara, and will soon be able to provide us with the first results - buit it is amazing and gorgeous, a vineyard straddling two hills, steep, windy, vertiginous! Wow!
